I've just edited a couple of photos that I took on the weekend - would love some critique Tiff! I think it was probably getting a little dark when I headed out & I think they might be a little blurry (either that, or I need new glasses LOL!). I have brightened them up a bit with Picasa, they might look a bit artificial now! Not sure if the sunset photo is really a landscape either, but would love to know what you think of it anyway!

Hiya Pepper. So glad to see you giving it a go.
The first one is a bit blurred probably because the shutter had to slow down to catch what light was left in the sky, being a low light situation. If you had rested the camera on tripod, chair, ladder, the bonnet of the car (car turned off) then it would have been a bit crisper for you. Sunsets/rises are landscapes depending on how you capture them. I 'll put one up after I finish the critique to show you. ;O). Your horizon is leaning downwards on the left a little bit. Sunrises/sets are tricky to photograph well. See that really bright yellow, to the left of the street light. That would be a highlight blowout. Meaning it was so bright that its overwhelmed the sensor and there is very little if any image information captured in that spot, so its just about turned white.
Hilary's looking towards Scarborough Beach. Great attempt. You've got the foreground interest with reeds and bridge, the middle distance with the beach and the people, and the far distance with the buildings and coast. You need that distance detail to give the shot a sense of place, so you know where this shot was taken at, otherwise it could be any beach anywhere ijkwim. The reeds make the shot a bit busy but its a nice shot of colour. Could you have stood on a part of the bridge so that's still in the shot and get the beach and distance that way and miss the reeds all together?? The bridge would give a nice feel to it and it would lead the eye into the image to the beach. Just a thought.
Hilary's looking to Africa. (love the Africa bit btw ) Nice straight horizon (big tick), foreground interest in the foliage, but the middle distance is a bit bland. A person walking along, a dog running, a child building a sandcastle, a boat in the water is all that's need to really captivate the viewer.
Often simplicity works well with landscapes. Too much detail just overwhelms the eye. Just the same as scrapbooking . And the rules of thirds, and the grouping of odd elements is the same for scrapping and photography. So, as you can see, the two different hobbies are very much the same. Isnt that great!! That means you already know the guts of it. YAY!!!!
Well done Pepper. you are getting there and thanks so much for putting the images up for me to critique for you.

this is photo taken at dawn last week. (I am NOT a morning person at all ). In low light situations if you can use water to light up your shots by using the reflection of the light in the sky, It's a wonderful trick to remember.
tripod. (I had it and me in the water up to my ankles for this shot) (wearing purple rubber boots and trying not to make ripples) ISO 50 (the lowest number it can go) f22 (the highest number, the highest focus) shutter 0.8 seconds to capture the light.
I used a remote shutter release. You can use the delayed timer button on your camera if you dont have a remote.
I have a zillion to share of sunsets at green island but I am keen for your thoughts so I will do one at a time so that I dont completely take over the post
