try the sunny side Julez and have another go. The light on an overcast day would be even better. It's even and you wont lose the tiny details in the petals. (veins).

hey there Belinda. Isn't he a cutie pootie!!
TIP. ***You mentioned that he had on his sister's pink PJ' bottoms on. I did forget to mention that clashing colours in clothing can be eliminated by converting that shot into BW. Thank you for reminding me of that. And also that with BW photos, you can choose what ever range of PP's that take your fancy, rather than be limited according to the coloured photo(s).***
Now then, Rory is a bit out of focus. I reckon you may have had the camera a little bit too close to him and the lens was unable to lock the focus on him. Try shifting yourself back a bit and use your zoom to get in close. Or, take it from further back and then crop into the shot on your computer later on. Remember to focus on his eyes!!! The side lighting is wonderful, as it gives his face roundness and dimension. It's just not a flat 2d seeming shot. The light objects next to his ear and on the right edge are a bit distracting tho.
hope this helps a bit. It's wonderful that he's so keen to get his photos. Get 'em while you can!!
